Death/La Mort (ECF Fall 2008, 21.1)
Editor -  Peter Walmsley

This special issue studies the theme of death in print culture of the long eighteenth century. Covering a wide spectrum of literary genres -- plays, essays, novels, journals, diaries, biographies -- the authors in this volume reveal that writers of all stripes were actively negotiating the doctrines and disciplines of death in their culture, participating in the process by which death became untamed. These articles show the tension between traditional Christian doctrine and new valuations of human experience and emotion played out in the print culture of the Enlightenment. Writers in the eighteenth century were keen to explore doubts about the boundaries of life and death, heaven and hell, and about the appropriate rituals and expressions of mourning.
