La Modernité du genre romanesque en France au XVIIIe siècle (ECF Summer 1995, 7.4)
Editor - English Showalter

Despite their various conceptions of modernity, and despite their divergent approaches to the eighteenth century, the five contributors to this special issue display a significant convergence of interests. All read what Boileau called the "frivolous novel" for a deep structure, closely related to if not identical with the mentality of the age as a philosopher might describe it. All look outside the traditional canon and find significant material. And finally, all find the question of modernity in the eighteenth-century French novel still a vital concern.
