Genocide is a human-made catastrophe, and, as such, it can be prevented by humankind. Genocide Studies and Prevention’s goal is to generate new ideas for preventing genocide.
Genocide Studies and Prevention is an international, interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal that addresses cutting-edge issues in the field of genocide studies and related areas such as preventive diplomacy, conflict management, intervention, sanctions, and post-genocide issues.
Genocide Studies and Prevention provides a much-needed forum for discussion, fostering awareness of the atrocities linked to genocide while promoting the necessity of prevention. The journal publishes articles on the latest developments in policy, research, and theory from various disciplines, including history, political science, sociology, psychology, international law, criminal justice, women’s studies, religion, philosophy, literature, and anthropology.
In addition to its regular ground-breaking articles, in-depth book reviews, and stimulating editorials, GSP has published several special issues:
Genocide in Darfur (GSP 1:1)
The Armenian Genocide (GSP 1:2)
The Prevention of Genocide: Ideas from International Politics and a Symposium on International Law (GSP 2:1)
The 1994 Rwandan Genocide (GSP 2:3)
The Aftermath of Genocide (GSP 3:3)
Indigenous Peoples (GSP 4:1)
The Darfur Crisis
(GSP 4:3)
GSP has published two special issues on the Darfur Crisis.
The first provided and overview of the crisis. This second special issue
features contributions from some of the most active scholars on Darfur and
takes an in-depth look at what has transpired in Darfur 2004-2009, including
the ICC charges against President Omar al-Bashir.
A Symposium on MARO:
Mass Atrocity Response Operations (GSP 6:1)
Now in its sixth volume, Genocide Studies and
Prevention continues in its commitment to providing cutting edge research and
commentaries on the prevention and understanding of genocide. In issue 6:1,
April 2011, GSP presents a symposium on MARO (Mass Atrocities Response
Operations: A Military Planning Handbook). Developed through the collaboration
of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School and
the US Army Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute, the MARO Handbook
outlines identification, preparation and response processes involved with
dealing with mass atrocities. This thought provoking issue of GSP presents multiple
international perspectives on the development, use and implications of this
controversial handbook.
