President's Report: Guardian of Gates Jury
Members Dear
Bookbird Reader, We thank the juries ably led by Jay Heale, Jury President, for their dedicated service. The deliberations for the 2002 Awards marked the first time that the Author and Illustrator Awards were selected by separate juries. The article on page 72 identifies the jury members and describes their work. We also deeply appreciate the generous contribution of Nissan Motor Company for its support of the Andersen Awards. Thirty-one countries submitted nominations for the 2002 Awards: twenty-eight authors and twenty-seven illustrators. These esteemed individuals represent every continent, speak and write in a multitude of languages, and contribute their own unique style as author or artist. Yet they all share a respect for their child audience and a commitment to the value and importance of providing quality books for children. Some of the authors create poetry; others write fantasy, realistic fiction, or nonfiction; still others retell traditional tales of their culture. Some craft their stories in a serious tone, while others are known for their wit and humor. They write for children of all ages from the preschool years to adolescence. These authors' works have been translated into many languages, and some authors have translated children's books from other languages into their own. They have been honored with numerous awards in their home countries and internationally. The illustrators render their art in watercolors, oils, gouache, collage, and pen and ink. Each artist applies line, shape, color, and texture in a distinctive way to create a personal style. Readers may view some illustrations as realistic and some of them as fanciful. There are illustrators who are also writers, while some artists illustrate texts written by others. These illustrators have exhibited their works around the globe. This issue of Bookbird is a tribute to all the nominees and their significant contributions to the world of children's literature. Their work crosses borders and fosters the goals of IBBY to promote international understanding and peace through children's books. As we prepared this issue, many individuals have assisted us. We thank Leena Maissen and Elizabeth Page at the IBBY Secretariat in Basel for providing us photographs and other materials. We also appreciate the writing talents of Penni Cotton and several other individuals who contributed to writing the author and illustrator profiles. Susan Clawson, meticulous copy editor, ensured the accuracy of the text, and Lesli Lai, our design and production manager, spent countless hours in creating this issue. We hope you enjoy reading about these eminent authors and illustrators as much as we have enjoyed writing about them and working on this special issue. The
