Advice to Contributors

Cartographica publishes manuscripts of both professional and full monograph length, covering a full range of cartographic topics that include at least a technical or cultural emphasis and represent work in the history of cartography, map design, map use, geographic information and geovisualization. Perhaps the two best approaches, if in doubt about the appropriateness of your material, are to examine a selection of previous issues of the journal and to contact the Editor.

Cartographica has no restrictions on the location in the world of contributors and, in fact, encourages international contributions. Publication is in either English or French. Abstracts, however, will be published in both languages.

Cartographica is pleased to introduce a new section of the journal, Technical Notes and Ephemera which will carry research notes, technical information, and commentaries discussing issues of general cartographic interest.

Cartographica is pleased to introduce a new section of the journal, Technical Notes and Ephemera which will carry research notes, technical information, and commentaries discussing issues of general cartographic interest. The journal is also open to commentaries relating to published articles. In such cases, the contribution will be sent to the author of the original article so that a response can be published simultaneously. Cartographica also carries an extensive section of reviews of atlases, maps, and books on cartographic subjects, both historical and modern.

Submissions
Manuscripts are accepted preferably as digital files in MS Word or Rich Text Format (RTF), as paper copies, double-spaced (preferably 81/2" x 11" or A4), on Compact Disk (CD), or on diskette in Windows, or Macintosh format. If submitted on diskette in the Macintosh format, files should be on high-density diskettes (not double- or -low density). Manuscripts submitted as digital files in MS Word or Rich Text Format (RTF) must be accompanied by hard copy. Page layout formatting should be avoided. Diskettes must be in good condition. Prospective contributors are advised to visit the Guidelines and Checklist for Authors for more detailed information (include link to "Author's Guidelines and Checklist" document). Submissions should normally be made to the Editor, although members of the Editorial Advisory Board and some Contributing Editors may function in the refereeing process, as long as the Editor has been informed of manuscripts under consideration, and the manuscript has been forwarded to the Editor following a review.

Cartographica does not accept previously published material, except in very special circumstances. The Editor should also be informed if a manuscript is under consideration by any other publisher.

Format
Please state the full name and address of the author(s) on the cover sheet, with the title, and use an abbreviated title only for the headers. In selecting a title, care should be exercised that is descriptive of the topic: titles are usually the basis for indexing scholarly publications. The printout of the text should be double-spaced, but authors should avoid double-spacing of words and paragraphs in digital files. For additional information about the format, see (the link to Author's Guideline and Checklist document).

Refereeing
All professional paper- and monograph-length manuscripts are reviewed by at least two referees. This is a "double blind" process. Referees do not receive a fee; they regard this as a professional service, and they are encouraged to work expeditiously. Referees are not infallible, particularly since they do not know the author. Most manuscripts require revisions. In this phase, authors are requested to work carefully through the referees' criticisms, but may submit a covering letter with the revised manuscript, citing their reasons for disagreeing with particular criticisms. The Editor reserves the right to seek further input from referees, and to decline a manuscript for publication, even after revisions have been made. However, the Editor will request revisions only when there is a likelihood of eventual publication.

Final Submission
Once a manuscript has been accepted for publication, the Editor requires that it be provided as a digital file in MS Word or Rich Text Format (RTF) as covered in the Author's Guidelines and Checklist document mentioned above. It is the author's responsibility to obtain permissions for any reprinting of previously published material.

Authors will be asked to sign a copyright waiver to allow University of Toronto Press Inc. to administer requests for reprinting articles, and to ensure that each author receives a portion of any fee so received. Authors of articles receive 25 offprints and may purchase additional copies at advantageous prices if they order them before the issue is printed.

Authors' Guidelines and Checklist for Final, Revised Manuscripts

The following checklist and guidelines are intended to ensure that authors provide the Editor with the required materials that will hasten publication of the article. Authors are encouraged to check off the requirements listed below. With some exceptions, the University of Toronto Press follows The Chicago Manual of Style, 14th edition, Chapter 15, Documentation One, for humanities-based articles and Chapter 16, Documentation Two, for scientific and technical articles, but uses Canadian spellings.

1. Abstract in the language of the paper, English or French, up to 200 words.

2. A list of not more than ten (10) key words.

3. A statement, up to 50 words, of the position, affiliation, address, and other contact information for each author and the e-mail address of the corresponding or lead author. This information will appear at the bottom of the first column on the first page of the article.

4. Copy of permission to use copyrighted material, if applicable.

Final Manuscript
5. Final revised manuscript should be submitted as a digital file in MS Word or Rich Text Format (RTF) and sent as an e-mail attachment, on diskette, or on CD.
a. Page-layout formatting should be avoided.
b. The final revised manuscript in digital format should be single-spaced, preferably in a 12-point, serif type style.
c. If subheadings are used in the text, first-order headings should be in bold typeface, second-order headings in italic typeface, and third-order headings in roman (upright) typeface. If more than three subheadings, indicate the level as appropriate.
d. Figures and tables should not be embedded in the text. See section 7. Figures and Tables, below.

Endnotes
6. Notes should appear as embedded endnotes (cartographica does not use footnotes). Reference numbers for endnotes must be marked in the text.

Figures and Tables
7. Figures and Tables should not be embedded in the text. Instead, authors should indicate where in the text they should be inserted with a phrase such as "Figure 1 about here" or "Table 2 about here".
a. Tables:
1) The use of vertical lines in tables should be avoided. Horizontal lines are acceptable.
2) Provide a single MS Word or Rich Text Format (RTF) file containing all tables.

b. Figures:
1) cartographica uses the following sizes for Figures: 21 picas or 89 mm (column width), 28 picas or 118 mm (half page), and 42 picas or 178 mm (full page).
2) Provide a separate EPS, PostScript, or TIFF file (resolution at 600 pixels per inch) in black and white for each figure; glossy prints at publication size or larger are acceptable, especially for complex graphics.
3) Adobe Illustrator: If submitting figures (line drawings) produced in Adobe Illustrator, please "outline" the type prior to making the EPS files. This eliminates problems with font incompatibilities.
4) CorelDRAW: If using CorelDRAW to produce figures (line drawings), convert the type to curves before making the EPS files. Converting type to artwork eliminates incompatibility problems with fonts.
5) NOTE: The University of Toronto Press will print figures in colour at the author's expense. Contact Co-Editor Clifford H. Wood (address below) for further information.
6) Provide a separate MS Word or RTF file of all captions for figures.

References and Bibliography
8. All references in the body of scientific/technical articles using Chicago Documentation Two should be in scientific format: (Harrison 1997) or (Harrison, Dodge, and MacLean 2001) for up to three authors; (Harrison and others 2001) for more than three authors. Do not use et al. All articles, including those documented in Chicago humanities style (Documentation One), must include a bibliography.

a. Entries in the References or Bibliography should be grouped at the end of the text in alphabetical order by author's surname. Multiple entries for the same author should be listed chronologically, earliest first.
b. Only references cited in the text should be included in the bibliography. An author's publications should be listed chronologically beginning with the earliest.
c. The surnames and initials, or surnames and full first names (providing the author uses one or the other consistently), of all authors (even if more than three) should be included in reference or bibliography entries.
