Editorial - Working Together At the World Congress of the International Association of Gerontology (IAG) in Rio de Janeiro in 2005, I found myself sitting with Dr. Howard Bergman (President of the Canadian Geriatrics Society, CGS), as two of the official Canadian representatives at the IAG assembly. Howard and I began to talk about how the various groups in Canada might work together. Howard explained to me that he had taken on the role of co-director of the scientific committee for the Congrès international francophone gérontolie et gériatrie (CIFGG) to be held in Québec City in October 2006. Out of our conversations, came the idea that the CJA might publish the abstracts of the congress as Supplement 1, 2006 in conjunction with the CIFGG and the Canadian Geriatrics Society (CGS). The results of this discussion are what you see before you. For many of us who will not be at the congress, it is an opportunity to see what our Francophone colleagues around the world are doing across the various topics that are of interest to gerontologists and geriatricians. Since all of the participants at the congress will receive the supplement, it is also one small way to demonstrate how the organizations that represent us can work together. When Barry McPherson was President of the Canadian Association on Gerontology (CAG) and Chris MacKnight was President of CGS, they worked hard to improve communications and relations among various groups in Canada who had a declared interest in gerontology and geriatric medicine. Our current President, Sandi Hirst, and Howard Bergman, the current President of CGS, have continued to build on these earlier efforts. The CJA is proud to contribute to their efforts and to the success of the congress. We offer our best wishes to those who are participating in the CIFGG and hope the scientific program of the congress is an outstanding success. Please think of the CJA as a place where you might publish the research you are presenting at CIFGG. The CJA publishes in both French and English. Please feel free to contact me if you have any thoughts that you would like to share about the supplement or any other aspect of the journal. I can be reached at rosenber@post.queensu.ca.
