Texts and practices: Readings in critical discourse analysis. In this issue we are pleased to feature the winning entry in our annual competition for the Best Paper by a graduate student. In her article ‘Acquisition of grammatical gender in Italian as a foreign language,’ Katrina Oliphant, an MA student at the University of Hawaii, investigates the sensitivity to gender cues exhibited by second language learners of Italian. In addition to being featured in this issue, Katrina will receive a complimentary subscription to the CMLR. The deadline for this year’s competition for the Best Paper by a Graduate student is May 30, 1998. We are very pleased to announce two new additions to the editorial team. Dr. Wladyslaw (Walter) Cichocki from the University of New Brunswick and Dr. Patricia Duff from the University of British Columbia will be providing regional representation for the CMLR as well as advising the editors in their areas of special expertise. Walter Cichocki is Professor of French and Linguistics and chair of the Department of French at UNB. He received his PhD in Linguistics from the University of Toronto in 1986 with specialization in sociolinguistics and phonetics. His primary research interests lie in the study of varieties of French spoken in Canada, especially Acadian French, and in French second language acquisition. He is also involved in the application of information technologies to language teaching/learning. Patricia Duff (PhD, UCLA) is associate professor of language education at UBC and director of the undergraduate and graduate program in modern languages education. Her research and teaching interests include research methodology, second language/immersion classroom research, processes of second language acquisition and socialization, and teacher education. We are very pleased to welcome them to the team. We are sorry to announce that Professor Herbert Schutz of the German and Slavic Studies Department at Brock University has been forced by ill health to step down from our Advisory Committee. Professor Schutz has been associated with the CMLR for many years and our appreciation goes to him for his help and support.
Nous sommes heureuses de faire paraître dans ce numéro l’article gagnant à notre concours annuel du meilleur travail rédigé au niveau des 2e et 3e cycles. Dans son article intitulé « Acquisition of grammatical gender in Italian as a foreign language », Katrina Oliphant, étudiante à la maîtrise à l’Université de Hawai’i, examine la sensibilité aux indices des genres dont font preuve les apprenants de l’italien, langue seconde. Katrina recevra également un abonnement à la RCLV à titre gracieux. La date limite cette année pour le concours du meilleur travail rédigé au niveau des 2e et 3e cycles est le 15 mai 1998. D’autre part, nous sommes très heureuses de vous informer que deux nouveaux membres ont joint l’équipe de rédaction. M. Wladyslaw (Walter) Cichocki de l’Université du Nouveau-Brunswick (UNB) et Mme Patricia Duff de l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique (UBC) représenteront la RCLV dans leur région respective et, en outre, conseilleront la rédaction dans leur domaine de spécialisation. Walter Cichocki est professeur de français et de linguistique et directeur du Département de français à l’UNB. Il a obtenu son doctorat en linguistique de l’Université de Toronto en 1986 avec spécialisation en sociolinguistique et en phonétique. Ses principaux travaux de recherche portent sur l’étude des variétés du français parlé au Canada, plus particulièrement le français acadien, et sur l’acquisition du français, langue seconde. Il est aussi impliqué dans la mise en œuvre des technologies de l’information relatives à l’enseignement et à l’apprentissage d’une langue. Patricia Duff détient un doctorat de l’Université de Californie, Los Angeles (UCLA) ; elle est professeure agrégée de l’enseignement des langues à l’UBC et directrice du programme des 1er, 2e et 3e cycles de l’enseignement des langues vivantes. Dans les champs de la recherche et de l’enseignement, elle s’intéresse à la méthodologie de la recherche, à la recherche qui porte sur la langue seconde et sur l’immersion en salle de classe, aux processus d’acquisition d’une langue seconde et de socialisation, ainsi qu’à la formation des enseignants. Nous sommes très heureux de les acceuillir dans notre équipe. Nous regrettons de vous informer que le professeur Herbert Schutz du Département des études allemandes et slaves à l’Université Brock a dû se retirer du Comité de consultation pour des raisons de santé. Le professeur Schutz a été associé à la RCLV pendant de nombreuses années et nous le remercions vivement pour son aide et son appui.
