A Guide for Authors

The CMLR welcomes the submission of previously unpublished articles which address issues of learning and teaching in the field of second language education.

1. Manuscript Specifications

All submissions should be laid out according to the specifications for
references and bibliographies as described in the Publication Manual of the APA (4th edition) and submitted to: The Canadian Modern Language Review / La Revue canadienne des langues vivantes, Journals Division, University of Toronto Press Incorporated, 5201 Dufferin Street, North York, ON, Canada M3H 5T8.

Articles: Manuscripts should be no longer than 25 double spaced pages inclusive of references, notes, etc. and should be accompanied by an abstract of no more than 150 words. Three copies of the article and abstract should be submitted, marked only with the title of the article. A separate cover sheet is required with the following information: title of article, name of author, address, telephone number, fax number, email address, and a brief biographical note (maximum 75 words).

Focus on the Classroom: Submissions to be considered under the heading 'Focus on the Classroom' should incorporate an explicit pedagogical focus, either in the treatment (the pedagogical cycle to be examined) or in the outcomes of the study. The theoretical framework underlying the argument should be clearly presented, and the links between the theory and pedagogy made explicit. Submissions should reflect current thinking in applied linguistics. They should be well-written and organized, and no more than 20 pages in length, inclusive of references, figures, and tables.

Book Reviews: Length should be approximately 700-800 words. Publishers and authors are invited to submit books for review to CMLR at the above address.

2. Review Policy

All articles will be subject to a preliminary internal review. Those deemed appropriate will be sent to readers for blind review. The editors rely heavily on such readers but are not bound by their judgment.

3. Publication Policy

If an article is accepted for publication, authors will be asked to provide the text of the abstract in both English and French, and a copy of their manuscript on a 3½" Macintosh or IBM diskette. Any complex graphics must be supplied in camera ready form. Authors accepted for publication will be asked to follow a detailed style sheet.
