SUBMISSION
INSTRUCTIONS
Editorial
Focus
The
journal publishes articles, review articles, and short reviews whose
purpose is the multi- and interdisciplinary analysis and understanding
of the culture, both past and present, of the United Statesand
of the relations between the cultures of the United States and Canada.
We invite contributions from authors in all relevant scholarly disciplines
related to the study of the United States, in English or in French.
All submissions will be given an external, blind review.
Manuscripts
are considered as papers, 2025 pages in length. Book reviews
should be approximately 35 pages in length. Send all manuscripts
and book reviews to Canadian Review of American Studies, Department
of English, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, Ontario,
Canada K1S 5B6. Manuscripts will not normally be returned unless a
self-addressed stamped envelope, with Canadian postage, is provided.
Manuscripts
Solicited
and contributed manuscripts must be typed double-spaced using a 12-point
serif font (i.e., Times Roman, Garamond, Palatino), including biographical
notice, endnotes, and works cited. Three hard copies plus a diskette
version must be provided at the time of submission. A separate cover
sheet must include the author's name, affiliation, title of paper,
and contact information (address, telephone, fax, e-mail). Only the
title of the paper appears in bold and centred at the top of each
of the hard copies. The author's name must not appear anywhere on
the hard copies of the manuscript. This is to facilitate blind peer
review. The diskette must be clearly labelled with the author's name,
file name, program and operating system (i.e., John Doe, Doe.txt,
Word 5.0, MAC). Windows or DOS formats are preferred. Submission of
an original manuscript to CRAS indicates that it represents
original work not previously published, that it is not being considered
elsewhere for publication and, if accepted for publication, it will
not be published elsewhere in the same form nor in translation without
the prior consent of the editors. A 150-word abstract should also
be included, along with five key words.
Book
Reviews
Book
reviews follow the same criteria as manuscripts with the exception
that only one hard copy need be submitted.
Diskettes
All
submitted manuscripts and book reviews must include a computer diskette.
The preference is for a 3 1/2 inch double-sided, high density diskette.
Files in Word Perfect or MS Word for Windows format are preferred.
Program version and operating system must be specified on the label.
(i.e., WordPerfect 6.1 for Windows)
Style
Authors
are requested to use the Modern Language Association Handbook
(5th edition) system for citations and references.
English Canadian spelling must be used. Please also use italics instead
of underlining in references as well as in the text. More specific
information regarding notes, references, and citations is provided
below.
Notes
1.
Endnotes are the only accepted form of notes. Footnotes must not be
used. 2. Use of notes should be sparing. They should be used only
where additional explanations are absolutely necessary but cannot
be incorporated in the text. 3. Notes are listed after the text and
before the works cited list. 4. Acknowledgement of either financial
or intellectual assistance appears as the first note and is unnumbered
and un-indented. 5. Notes must be numbered with a period after the
number and a ˝ inch indent after the number. 6. Notes are single spaced.
7. Notes appear after the text, with three line-spaces between the
end of the manuscript and the beginning of the notes. The word Notes
must appear at the left margin in bold with the initial letter capitalize:
Notes.
Works
Cited
1.
Works cited must follow Notes and list only those works actually cited
in the text. 2. Works cited must appear on a separate page, with the
title in bold, initial capitals, at the top-left margin of the page:
Works Cited. 3. Each item must be single-spaced, with a double space
between items. 4. Items by the same author must be ordered alphabetically
by title.
The
following formats must be strictly adhered to:

4.
Single-space all entries, double-space between entries, and triple-space
between the title and the first entry. 5. List entries in alphabetical
order, according to the author's or editor's surname. If no name is
given, list according to the first significant word in the title.
Do not number entries. 6. Begin each entry at the left margin with
each subsequent line indented ˝ inch (hanging indent or left indent-back
tab). 7. The authors or editors last name is listed first,
followed by a comma and the authors/editors first name.
In the case of an editor, follow first name with a comma and ed.
Book or journal titles are italicized. Article titles are in plain
text and enclosed in double quotes. Initial capitals should be used
in all titles. The editor of a book is listed after the book title,
by first name then surname. The editor is identified with the abbreviation
Ed. before the first name of the first editor. A comma
separates book or journal titles from publishing information. City
of publication follows, then publisher, then year of publication.
Page numbers are the last information section of the entry. Use single
space between all punctuation within the entry. 8. If more than one
work by the same author is cited, three hyphens are typed before the
publication date in place of the name, ---. Arrange works by the same
author alphabetically by title.
Citations
in the Text
1.It
is preferable to put citations in the text rather than as notes. 2.Citations
appear in parentheses with closing punctuation following. 3. Inside
the parentheses must appear the author's last name followed by a space
and the page number. There is no space between the colon and the page
number. For example: (Doe 89). 4.If more than one citation is given,
a semi-colon separates each entry within the parentheses. For example:
(Doe 89; Dunne 3). 5.If multiple page references are given, either
a single hyphen or a comma separates each number. For example: (Doe
89-102) or (Doe 89, 112, 115-119). 6. If the author's name is provided
in the text, only give the page number. 7. If an entire work is being
cited, try to include the author's name and the title of the work
rather than providing it in parentheses. 8. If the work has more than
one author, give all names. 9.If the work is listed by title only,
provide the title or a shortened version of it in the parentheses.
10. If the work has a corporate author, provide the name of the organization
or a shortened version of it in the parentheses. 11. If the citation
follows a quotation, place the parentheses after the quotation mark
but before the end of punctuation. 12. If the citation follows a block
quotation, place the parentheses after the period, followed by no
second period. 13.If you are citing two or more works by the same
author, label each work with a shorted form of the title. For example:
(Doe, Syllogisms 89), (Doe, Bureaucracy Woes 127).
