This issue looks at the collaboration of professional theatre artists within specific communities in Canada and their role in these communities as agents of civic engagement. Topics to be discussed include working conditions in community-based work, the ethics of artist–community encounter, and the problem of measuring artistic “success” in the community context.

Contributors include Conrad Alexandrowicz, Ruth Howard, Caroline Howard, Sourouja Moll, Mieko Ouchi, Honor Ford Smith, Caleb Johnston, Edith Regier, Nisha Sajnani, and Savannah Walling.

The script, Night by Christopher Morris and Human Cargo, examines the vexed relationship between artists in the Canadian South and communities in the North.
