Seminar
was edited by Professor Robert Farquharson (University of Toronto)
from 1965 to 1970. From 1970 to 1980, Michael S. Batts (UBC) was the
Editor. He was succeeded by Professor Heinz Wetzel (University of
Toronto) from 1980-1985, followed by Patrick O'Neill (UBC, Queen's)
from 1985-1990, and by Professor Rodney Symington (University of Victoria)
from 1990 to 2002. Beginning in the Spring of 2002, Professor Raleigh
Whitinger (University of Alberta) became the Editor.
The journal
appeared twice yearly from 1965 to 1969, three times yearly from 1970
to 1973, and quarterly since 1974.
The first
annual volume contained 132 pages, but the size has grown over the
years, approaching 400 pages in a year of four average-sized issues,
but exceeding that when special issues are published. The normal publishing
schedule is four issues per year of 96 pages each, each issue generally
consisting of 4-5 articles and 22-24 pages of book-reviews.
The objectives
of Seminar are:
To propagate the scholarly and critical knowledge und understanding
of Germanic Studies, meaning the study primarily of literature and culture
of the German-speaking countries, and secondarily of literature and
culture in other Germanic languages excluding English; to promote international
recognition of Canadian Scholarship in this field by providing a distinctive
Canadian outlet for Canadian scholars;
- to
stimulate and renew the scholarly and critical discussion of Germanic
Studies in Canada by including international scholarship in the
field in a Canadian journal;
- to
foster international cooperation in the study of Germanic literatures
and cultures in the English-speaking world through our special relationship
with Australasian colleagues.
Some
basic guidelines:
- no
articles are solicited;
- no
articles on pure linguistics or pedagogy are accepted;
- submissions
may be in English, French, or German;
- submissions
will be considered regardless of the author's professional status
or rank, institutional affiliation, or nationality--quality of the
scholarship alone is the decisive factor;
- since
1987, submissions have been subject to a process of anonymous peer-review--while
the Editorial Committee decides on matters of a managerial nature,
the assessors for the submission are chosen, according to the topic
of the submission, from a data base of over 400 scholars from North
America, Europe (including the U. K.), and Australasia with documented
expertise in the area;
- no
unsolicited book-reviews are considered, but colleagues are invited
to suggest or volunteer reviews.
