Founded in 1985, the Canadian Journal of Law and Society (CJLS/RCDS) was initially based at University of Calgary's Research Unit for Socio-Legal Studies. Since 1990, the Journal has become affiliated with the Canadian Law and Society Association. Its editorship was at the same period transferred to University of Quebec in Montreal. CJLS/RCDS became biannual beginning with Volume 7 (1992), and certain issues have been thematic since then. CJLS/RCDS seeks to promote and publish original research on law and normative orders understood as social phenomena. The Journal is interdisciplinary in scope, calling for a variety of perspectives and methods.
La Revue Canadienne Droit et Société (RCDS/CJLS) fut créée en 1985 et éditée d'abord à l'Université de Calgary, au Research Unit for Socio-Legal Studies. Depuis 1990, la Revue est rattachée à l'Association canadienne Droit et Société, alors que la rédaction est transférée à l'Université du Québec à Montréal. À partir du Volume 7 (1992), le rythme de publication passe à deux numéros par an et certains numéros seront désormais thématiques. La RCDS/CJLS vise à promouvoir la publication de recherches inédites portant sur le droit et les ordres normatifs, entendus comme phénomènes sociaux. Elle est interdisciplinaire, faisant appel aux diverses perspectives et méthodes d'analyse du droit et de la normativité.
